Confovis GmbH

Industry: Semiconductors / Metrology

Company headquarters: Jena, Thuringia

Employees: approx. 45

Founded: 2009

Confovis, based in Jena, Thuringia, specializes in the development and manufacture of systems for automated optical inspection (AOI) and optical 3D surface metrology. Since 2009, the company has been offering customer-oriented, application-specific solutions for the photonics, MEMS, 3DIC and advanced packaging sectors.

The WAFERinspect series is characterized by an innovative approach with the patented SIM measurement method for high-precision, non-contact 3D measurements without moving optical components. In the same beam path, the system enables image-based defect inspection with different light frequencies. This offers exceptional flexibility, stability, repeatability and accuracy in defect detection, classification and dimensional measurement.

Worker guidance with weasl at Confovis

Challenge & motivation

Confovis, an innovative manufacturer of optical 3D measurement and inspection systems for the semiconductor industry, was facing a major challenge: the paper-based documentation of the complex parameterization regularly led to traceability problems and cost-intensive rework. Up to 600 work steps and more than 1,000 parameters are required to complete a measuring device - a complex process in which errors in production can quickly lead to serious consequences.

It became increasingly difficult to train new employees in the assembly processes, as the knowledge transfer from the experienced employees took place on paper and sometimes with verbal additions. On average, it took longer than a year to train a new employee. The required information was decentralized and the collection and provision of relevant information was error-prone and time-consuming.

The step from paper to digital –
goals of the introduction of weasl

A digital worker guidance system was essential for Confovis. After an extensive test phase, Confovis therefore opted for the worker guidance system weasl, which impressed with its high level of flexibility, range of functions and the competent support provided by the weasl team.

Confovis pursued four main objectives with the introduction of weasl:

Reduction in training times

reduction in training times and error rates

Provide digital instructions

digital support for employees with clear step-by-step instructions in verbal and visual communication

Fail-safe data documentation

process and audit-proof documentation of the work steps

Transparent versioning

fast, uncomplicated versioning of work instructions

Meeting these targets should ensure that errors are avoided, quality standards are met and processes are made more efficient overall.

Convincing results & broad acceptance among employees

The initial successes speak for themselves: the average training period for new employees, which previously took more than a year, has been noticeably reduced. Employees are now able to be productive immediately and assemble components independently without having to rely primarily on experienced colleagues. weasl supports them digitally with the necessary image and text information and enables them to work without errors.

A decisive factor for the success of weasl at Confovis is the broad acceptance among employees. They particularly appreciate the tangible benefits of the system, which saves them time-consuming documentation processes, reduces rework and makes their day-to-day work much easier.

Conclusion: efficiency and future-proofing with weasl

With the introduction of weasl, Confovis has not only overcome short-term challenges, but also created long-term, strategic advantages. Thanks to weasl, the company saves time and money, increases employee productivity and ensures that every measuring device is delivered in high quality.

Confovis is planning further optimizations in the future: The next step is to connect weasl to the ERP system in order to import parts lists more quickly and automatically assign work instructions, for example.
